Birth
Welcome to Drenched in Light Doula Services. I learned about the work and role of doulas during the first semester of my Master of Public Health program, particularly piqued by significant positive impact they had on the birthing experiences and outcomes of Black birthing people. During my program, I worked with the only Black midwife in all of Southern California, and shortly thereafter learned I was pregnant and we were expecting twins. The prospect of one day pursuing doula work stayed with me through those early years of parenting and establishing myself in my public health career, and I finally took the leap in 2023. It has been an honor beyond what I can easily put into words to walk with families through this stage of life.
I am a full-spectrum prenatal, birth, and postpartum doula, and a graduate of the MamaGlow Homeschool Doula Training Program (Levels I and II). I practice primarily through New York City and the tri-state area. Below is information about the services I offer, words from past clients, and a contact form if you’d like to connect!

"Reflecting on my pregnancy and birthing journey, I'm truly grateful to have had Genay by my side through it all. Going into this experience as a first time mother was overwhelming at times; in the months leading up to the delivery, our regular check-ins with Genay made me feel more prepared and able to take on whatever scenario we would encounter. When the big day arrived, Genay's warmth and calmness got me through, along with her attentiveness and readiness to advocate for me when I was too tired and my husband was overwhelmed. And in the haze of the first few postpartum days, Genay's overnight oats were a game changer! If you're considering working with her, do it and you'll find a kind, caring, and deeply knowledgeable doula to help you welcome the new life into the world."

"Genay’s knowledge and support during my pregnancy and postpartum were instrumental to our positive postpartum experience. Genay offered gentle guidance as we adjusted to caring for our newborn, and encouraged me to seek additional medical care when I was having some concerning symptoms immediately postpartum. It felt so comforting knowing she was looking out for me and my baby when I had so little capacity. Her calm, sturdy presence and hands-on care in those first few days of my son’s life brought us so much peace. I cannot recommend her enough for soon-to-be parents!!!"

“As a first-time mom, I went into pregnancy and birth with so many questions, nerves, and unknowns, and Genay was truly a grounding presence every step of the way. From pregnancy through labor and birth, she provided unwavering support, reassurance, and care that made me feel informed, confident, and deeply supported. I was in labor for 36 exhausting hours that ended in a C-section, and Genay was there through every contraction and moment of doubt. When I was completely depleted, she stayed calm and steady, reminding me of my strength when I couldn’t see it myself. Her presence made an overwhelming, scary experience feel held and supported. Even after my son was born, Genay continued to show up in the most meaningful and tangible ways. She consistently found a way to meet me with compassion, patience, and genuine kindness, always making space for my needs and emotions. I am beyond grateful for her guidance and cannot imagine my birthing experience without her by my side.”

“From the moment I met Genay, I was taken by her beautiful energy. She is calming, intuitive, and deeply healing to be around—like human lavender. Because I have a spinal cord injury, I knew I would need a planned C-section. My mom, a pediatric nurse, was going to be with me throughout the delivery and postpartum period, so I initially didn’t think I would need a doula. But my pregnancy itself was incredibly difficult. The daily physical challenges left very little space for me to prepare emotionally—or otherwise—for the transition into motherhood. So I reached out to Genay hoping for some basic guidance (How many diapers would we need? How do I work a breast pump?) and also because I wanted the love and support of such a special, gifted person during a time of intense stress and anxiety. What we received, though, was so much more. Genay held space with extraordinary care for both me and my husband. She listened not only to my fears and hopes about becoming a mother, but to everything else that was shifting beneath the surface—my changing body, my evolving relationship with my career, my discomfort in my own skin, and the ways my marriage was transforming. She had an incredible ability to reflect my own words back to me in a way that made me feel profoundly seen. Often, it felt like she understood me better than I understood myself. In many ways, she felt like both a couples therapist and a doula. Her guidance went far beyond birth preparation. She provided detailed notes from our conversations, thoughtful follow-ups, recipes and meal-prep ideas, suggestions for rearranging our home to support recovery, and gentle encouragement around self-care and feeling at home in my body again. One of the things I appreciated most was how intentionally Genay made space for my husband. He was hesitant to share at first, feeling like this experience was primarily about me and the baby. Genay made him feel safe, validated, and truly heard. She helped him see that his fears mattered too, and offered guidance on how to support me, himself, and our new baby through this transition. Genay is a rare kind of presence—a truly magical healer. I can only imagine what it would have been like to have her supporting me in person after birth, but I know it would have been extraordinary. She is truly one of a kind, and we are endlessly grateful—not only for the way she helped us anticipate the challenges ahead, but for helping us open ourselves to the profound joy our daughter would bring.”
